Nachtwacht

Nachtwacht

Nachtwacht is no ordinary performance. It is a three-and-a-half-hour interdisciplinary farewell rave: acting, dance, and live music merge into a raw, physical experience that drags you into a family at a turning point. An evening about aging, mortality, and the desperate attempt to break free from the roles imposed upon us.

WHAT IF YOUR LAST NIGHT FELT LIKE A FEVER DREAM – A FINAL, CHAOTIC, BEAUTIFUL AND HEARTBREAKING CELEBRATION BEFORE EVERYTHING FADES TO BLACK?

After overwhelming reactions, nominations, and sold-out shows, Nachtwacht returns. What began as a radical theatrical experience grew into a performance that captivated both the audience and the creators. In 2027, Nachtwacht heads into the night once again.

The evening slides into the night. A heartbeat weakens, falters, and then swells into an unstoppable beat. Music draws the audience along in a ritual movement towards the unknown. What is old fades. What follows is an ecstatic release—a final outburst, just before the first light reveals everything.

At the center stands ‘Mr.’, a man in the final months of his life. Around him: family, spirits, memories. As he prepares for the end, his children grapple with a new era. They balance loyalty, longing, and the need to choose for themselves who they want to be.

With a sharp yet loving gaze, Nachtwacht intertwines humor and melancholy. The performance holds up a mirror to us, looking critically and empathetically at the Dutch healthcare system—and at what we expect of each other, and what we often do not dare to give.

The title refers to Rembrandt’s Night Watch: gatekeepers of a bygone era, but also to the emergence of power patterns that persist to this day. At the same time, the night here is literal: keeping vigil around a deathbed. A place where a family, despite everything, gathers for a final ritual.

And precisely there—at the end of the night—something can break open.
A moment of liberation.
A chance to choose who you are again.

With a cast of 25 musicians, dancers, and actors, Nachtwacht is a major performance about the small, personal moments that are recognizable to us all.
