Bucket list Apeldoorn – 10 sights

Secretly, everyone has a bucket list. Out of curiosity or to make new memories. Apeldoorn has more than enough sights to fill your bucket list. To give you a helping hand, we have listed ten places that should definitely not be missed!

1. Paleis Het Loo – more beautiful than ever

Paleis Het Loo is undoubtedly the most famous place in Apeldoorn. And rightly so, especially now that the palace has been extensively renovated and shines like never before. Did you know that the Palace once served as the summer residence of the Dutch stadtholder and royal family? Since 1984, it has been a museum consisting of the imposing palace building, the classic gardens, the coach house and the historic stables. Step inside the Palace building and walk through the various rooms decorated in the style of the 17th and 18th centuries. Fascinating audio stories bring the various residents to life, from William and Mary to Wilhelmina. And for young explorers, there is the Junior Palace, a place where curiosity and imagination come together.

3. Radio Kootwijk – the Cathedral of the Veluwe

During a visit to Apeldoorn, be sure to immerse yourself in the history of one of the most remarkable buildings in the Netherlands: the former Radio Kootwijk broadcasting station. This monumental building was constructed in the 1920s for a special purpose: radio telegraph contact with the former Dutch East Indies. The main building is known for its impressive and unique design, reminiscent of the Gothic architectural style of cathedrals. It is not without reason that the Radio Kootwijk transmitter building is also known as ‘The Cathedral of the Veluwe’. Guided tours are regularly organised by Staatsbosbeheer, but a look from the outside is free and definitely worth it.

4. Conquering observation towers – for a new perspective

Apeldoorn and the Veluwe are really something to see from above. That’s when you realise just how vast the hilly landscape is. A viewing tower is the perfect way to see your surroundings with new eyes. The most popular observation tower is the Zandloper on the Kootwijkerzand. From the top, you can look out over the vast Veluwe desert and, in good weather, you can even see Radio Kootwijk. In Stadspark Berg & Bos, you will find a second observation tower that is no less than 26 metres high! If you dare to climb to the top, you will be rewarded with a view of the city of Apeldoorn and the vast forests stretching for miles.

PLEASE NOTE: the observation tower in Stadspark Berg & Bos is currently closed for maintenance.

5. Palace Park and Crown Estate Het Loo - walking with royal allure

Just outside the walls of the Royal Palace Het Loo, you will find the Palace Park. Escape the hustle and bustle and relax as the royal residents and their guests once did. The park features unique buildings such as the boathouse, the tea house and the Willemstempel. There is even a horse cemetery with gravestones full of stories. Not only are Wilhelmina’s horses buried here, but also her favourite pet, Poesje – ‘My sweetheart’. The Palace Park is also part of the enormous nature reserve called Kroondomein het Loo. Here you will find various walking routes through the coniferous forests and rolling heathlands. And strangely enough, this piece of nature has a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the Veluwe. Is it the royal allure? Experience it for yourself!
