Tulip Town

Steef de Jong, Ilse Warringa, Rop Verheijen, Daniël Cornelissen and Thor Braun in an irresistible mix of operetta, humor and cardboard magic

Theatre maker Steef de Jong throws Offenbach’s 19th-century operetta classic L’île de Tulipatan into the blender and serves up a cardboard operetta feast full of energy, humor, and lightning-fast changes. Following the success of Postillon d’amour and Operetta Land, he is pulling out all the stops again, together with a top cast: Ilse Warringa, Rop Verheijen, Daniël Cornelissen, and Thor Braun, accompanied by a live band. Tulip Town is in town! This is operetta like you’ve never seen it before.

Sacred cows crumble and cardboard worlds unfold, while genders switch in a wink. Rich in androgynous costumes, spectacular sets, and with swirling live music, the operetta classic by Offenbach, the greatest punk of the 19th century, comes to life as a theatrical pop concert.

Rombooïdal, Grand Marshal to the Earl of Tulip Town, blames his wife Théodorine for their daughter Hermosa’s boyish behavior. Prince Alexis, on the other hand, turns out to be remarkably gentle and gracious. While these two are madly in love with each other, they discover that their parents had envisioned their lives just a little differently. Confusion is everywhere and complete, except for Hermosa and Alexis, who simply love each other just as they are. Tulip Town is therefore a cheerful plea for being who you are and, of course, for love!

Offenbach’s timeless melodies receive fresh, sharp arrangements from Marijn van Prooijen, in which punk occasionally bursts delightfully through the operetta. The music is played live by musicians who build a sparkling bridge between 1868 and the present. An irresistible mix of operetta, punk, and cardboard magic: Tulip Town is a dazzling feast for both the eyes and ears.
