Dvořák 9 ‘De nieuwe wereld’
The youth are the future! Orchestra Phion brings two young but already acclaimed musicians to the stage. Nikola Meeuwsen – the first Dutch winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition – performs Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. Ukrainian talent Olha Dondyk conducts.
Phion is conducted by Olha Dondyk for this concert. At only twenty years old, she made a strong impression at the Maestra Conducting Competition in Paris, made a stunning debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra last season, and has already conducted quite a few international orchestras, including Orkest Phion. She now returns with Dvořák’s beloved Ninth Symphony ‘From the New World’ , a musical memento of his American years. Music from the ‘old world’ serves as the concert opening: the overture to Wagner’s medieval music drama Tannäuser .
