Reshuffled Scenes

Reshuffled Scenes is an artistic investigation into decay, heritage, and transformation by Heidi Linck and Ronald de Ceuster. From November 28, 2026, to January 10, 2027, the artists present a total installation in their exhibition at the ACEC Café that stems from their research surrounding the Centraal Beheer building. A building behind the fences. What happens to the meaning of a building when its function disappears, access is closed off, and the future remains uncertain? With Reshuffled Scenes, visual artists Heidi Linck and Ronald de Ceuster explore Herman Hertzberger’s Centraal Beheer building. Herman Hertzberger’s former Centraal Beheer office in Apeldoorn still stands, but its relationship with its surroundings has changed drastically. Where the building was once a vibrant working environment, it is now a closed-off site. Fences define the boundary between the building and the city. And behind the fences, time seems to stand still. For visual artists Heidi Linck and Ronald de Ceuster, this peculiar state forms the starting point of Reshuffled Scenes. Through a series of guided walks around the building, site-specific interventions, and this exhibition in the ACEC Café, they explore the current state of being. Not only of the building, but also of its immediate surroundings. “When we stand by the fences surrounding the building, we get the feeling that we are looking at a forbidden city. A new fence seems to be added around it constantly, like annual rings in a tree. The building seems to be hiding a secret. We feel tempted to climb over the fence, but find it even more interesting precisely not to do so. We want to be present in the building through imagination.” — Heidi Linck & Ronald de Ceuster Centraal Beheer Building The former Centraal Beheer is one of the best-known buildings in the oeuvre of Herman Hertzberger and an important example of Dutch structuralism. The office, which opened in 1972, was designed based on ideas about encounter, connection, and appropriation. The structure offered users space to make the environment their own. Today, that relationship is the opposite: the building is hermetically sealed, meetings no longer take place there, and no one appropriates the surroundings anymore. Consequently, the building finds itself in a unique transitional phase. The original office function has long since disappeared, while a new purpose has not yet been determined. The Municipality of Apeldoorn now owns the complex and the surrounding grounds and is working on a future for the area. Moreover, the former Centraal Beheer was designated a national monument in June. However, the Reshuffled Scenes project deliberately does not focus on the question of what the building should become. Instead, Linck and De Ceuster are investigating what becomes visible and tangible in this transitional phase. De Omloop: A walk to an inaccessible place. On October 17, 2026, De Omloop will take place: a musical walk from the ACEC to De Hertzberger, as the former Centraal Beheer is also known today. Composer and horn player Jeroen van Dijk, who was associated with Orkest de Ereprijs until his retirement, created the music for De Omloop. Participants carry small Bluetooth speakers on which fragments of the composition play. They also carry a self-chosen object that is eventually left at the building. Upon arrival at De Hertzberger, a live performance by Van Dijk with horn and electronics follows. The route is an ode to the building. A second artist-led walk takes place on an evening yet to be determined in November or December. During this walk, Linck uses a theatrical spotlight to bring parts of the architecture out of the darkness and explore their scenographic potential together with an audience. Space as material Linck and De Ceuster both work with abandoned spaces. They do not use a building as a backdrop for an artwork, but explore how the space itself can become the work. Their interventions do not attempt to overwrite the place. They make visible what is already there and add a temporary layer to it. At De Hertzberger, this is particularly palpable. The Centraal Beheer office was once designed as a building intended to facilitate encounter and appropriation. Now, it is precisely the inaccessibility that activates the imagination. The question, therefore, is not what should happen to the building, but what a building can be as long as that question remains unanswered. A building that exhibits itself. From November 28, 2026, through January 10, 2027, Linck and De Ceuster present a total installation in the ACEC Café stemming from their research surrounding the building. Photographs, videos, notes, objects, and process images are brought together into an exhibition that does not so much document the building, but rather shows how a place slowly opens up during an artistic investigation. In this context, the fence does not constitute a boundary to be overcome, but rather an opportunity to seek a different form of access. Reshuffled Scenes thus poses a simple yet fundamental question: What can the meaning of a building be if it no longer has a function, has been abandoned by its inhabitants, and no one cares about it? Not by repurposing the building as real estate or assigning it a future in advance, but by perceiving it anew. And in doing so, leaving room for that which has not yet allowed itself to be captured.
