Ik had me de wereld anders voorgesteld
It is not easy to hold your own in this world while maintaining a positive outlook on the future. But understanding why we feel this way and engaging in that conversation with one another remains necessary.
In their third collaboration, director and actress Jouman Fattal and writer Timen Jan Veenstra present Ik had me de wereld anders verbeelding (I had imagined the world differently) , a whimsical theatrical performance about identity, polarization, and kinship. In their exploration, the creators draw upon the legacy of writer, journalist, and intellectual Anil Ramdas. Supported by performer Abdelkarim el Baz and compelling soundscapes by Elizabeth de Loore, the audience is swept along by Jouman Fattal into the swirling performance about ‘le condition migrante’.
Anil Ramdas wrote with a sharp pen about postcolonialism, migration, and identity. He was one of the few to oppose the rising right-wing populism and hatred of migrants: sentiments that have only intensified since his tragic suicide in 2012. Twenty-five years later, his striking observations and critique of the Netherlands in the 1990s and 2000s have proven to be good predictors of the Netherlands of today. The past has crept under our skin. And what remains for us then? Is there hope? In this vulnerable, poetic, and at times lighthearted performance, they hope to arrive at an answer.
