De Maestra’s

Two female grandmasters are the linchpin of this powerful program by Orkest Phion. Venezuelan conductor Glass Marcano won the Orchestra Award at the Paris Maestra Concours in 2020. Since then, she has become an indispensable figure in the international conducting world.

Hayoung Choi was the convincing winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2022. ‘She is absolutely fantastically good,’ according to the enthusiastic jury chair. Choi plays the sensitive and melancholic Cello Concerto that Elgar composed with the horrors of the First World War in mind. It remains one of the most moving cello concertos ever written.

The program opens with Glinka’s vibrant overture ‘Ruslan and Ludmila’ and concludes with Tchaikovsky’s compelling Fourth Symphony, about fate, struggle, and victory.
